gopher: the tool

Upon issuing

gopher
A menu very similar to figure 13.5 will appear on the screen.

To select any of the items on the menu, either enter the number associated with the item, or use the arrow keys to bring the arrow to it. Finally, press ENTER.

The result will depend on how the item on the menu ended.

If the line ended with a forward slash (/), another menu will appear. The forward slash means a connection to another menu.

If the line ended with <>, that item is linked to an indexed search. gopher will then ask for an entry from the user so that the search can go forward.

The search may be performed by any type of software tool.

For example, selecting menu item 10 in figure 13.5 would lead to figure 13.6.

If the item line ends with <TEL>, accessing that menu would perform a telnet to a system. gopher would then be left until the telnet session would be done.
