Public Domain Packages

This section describes some of the popular Public Domain packages used at NRC.

For information on whether these utilities are available on your particular system, consult your system administrator. Most packages are also available on the NRC anonymous FTP account, located on nrcnet0.nrc.ca, in directory /pub/unixug/free.software.

If you have access to any of the Silicon Graphics servers owned by the Science Institutes (nrcbsa.bio.nrc.ca, nrcphy1.phy.nrc.ca, ned1.sims.nrc.ca, sg1.chem.nrc.ca, gh1.hia.nrc.ca and their associated workstations) and managed by Informatics, the packages are already on your systems. Issue the snews command by itself, to get a list of packages and facilities added at NRC.

In many cases the snews package will explain how to copy it to your system.

Many of the SUNs managed by Informatics also have most of these packages.

• a2ps: ASCII PostScript translator.
• awf: nroff utility.
• ghostview: X-based PostScript previewer.
• gnuplot: 2-D plotting program.
• imconv: image converter program.

• lwf: ASCII to PS converter.
• pcal: calendar.
• ps2eps: PostScript to EPS translator.
• px2ps: convert to EPS.
• screen: windows for ASCII terminals.
• xdvi: DVI file previewer.
• xmgr: interactive 2D plotting package.
• xv: image viewer, editor.
