"The 2000 Mercury Sable continues as the 2000
flagship of the Mercury Brand. A new look inside Sable
and out - coupled with enhanced safety, power,
smoothness, comfort and convenience - make Sable the
perfect vehicle for the mid-size sedan segment. Its new
Advanced Restraints System and segment-first adjustable
accelerator and brake pedals are just two of many
examples of the forward thinking that's gone into
creating this latest-generation Sable. All in all, thanks
to extensive customer feedback and input, the 2000
Mercury Sable is the sophisticated, forward- thinking
alternative to the everyday sedan."

SAFETY AND SECURITY
The 2000 Mercury Sable's new Advanced Restraints System
adapts the air bag deployment strategy depending upon
impact severity, front seat safety belt usage and driver
seat position. Part of one of the most advanced
automotive safety systems in the world, the new system's
dual-stage air bags provide an advanced overall level of
protection and help reduce the risks of injury related to
air bag inflation.
Other features of the Advanced Restraints System include:
* Front crash severity sensor
* Front-seat safety belt usage sensors
* Driver seat position sensor
* Front-seat safety belt pretensioners
* Front-seat safety belt energy management retractors
Newly offered head-and-chest side air bags for the driver
and front passenger are concealed within the front seats'
side bolsters and enhance occupant protect in side-impact
collisions.
A new emergency trunk release is the first standard
system of its kind in the industry. An easy-to-find
phosphorescent handle is designed to allow anyone locked
in the trunk to open it from inside.
Child safety seat tethers - allow users to anchor
tether-equipped child safety seats in the rear seat for
enhanced protection.
Locking front seat head restraints - prevent unintended
repositioning during an impact; they are also two inches
taller for more comfort and head support.
Higher output headlamps - low-beam headlamps are 20
percent brighter and bulb-life is increased 100 percent.
SecuriLock passive anti theft system - standard
computer-controlled ignition-key-activated system that
prevents engine operation without the properly coded
ignition key.
COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE
Extensive customer feedback led Mercury to offer power
adjustable accelerator and brake pedals on the 2000 Sable
- a feature that is found on none of the vehicle's
competitors.
With the touch of a button, the brake and accelerator
pedals can, together, be horizontally adjusted up to
three inches toward the driver from the standard location
to provide added driving comfort for a wider range of
drivers.
Easier Access Trunk. The deck lid is one inch wider and
the liftover height is reduced by 1.5 inches to allow for
easier loading and unloading of cargo.
Inside the luggage compartment, convenient cargo hooks on
the rear trim panel can be used to hang shopping or
grocery bags.
On the Integrated Control Panel (ICP), audio and climate
controls are grouped in a new soft-cornered rectilinear
shape. Controls are operated by square buttons, which are
arranged in a conventional linear grid fashion for more
intuitive use.
The flip/fold console in the six-passenger Sable now
folds down flat to the floor, allowing better access to
the lower part of the Integrated Control Panel.
Five-passenger models feature a full-length floor console
that has a substantially larger armrest and offers
additional storage. For customers who select the six-disc
compact disc changer, it is now located inside the center
console in five-passenger models for easier
accessibility. Dual molded cup holders at the rear of the
console provide rear-seat occupants greater convenience.
Increased interior storage and convenience features on
the 2000 Mercury Sable also include:
* Molded map pockets in all four doors
* Seatback map pockets on the driver and passenger
seats
* Second power point
* Open storage bin in the center stack of the
instrument panel
* Adjustable cupholders and a passenger's-side console
map pocket on five-passenger models
DESIGN
Exterior enhancements to the 2000 Sable are evolutionary,
building on its heritage. New front, side and rear
styling features are designed to give the vehicle a
larger, higher, wider and more substantial appearance.
All exterior body panels except the doors and greenhouse
are new.
Inside, the 2000 Mercury Sable also includes numerous
enhancements. A two-tone instrument panel uses a dark
color on top to help reduce glare, while the lower
portion matches the side door trim.
Other interior design features include new instrument
cluster graphics along with air conditioning vent
registers that feature a chromed adjustment knob.
A polished Mercury badge at the center of the new
four-spoke steering wheel is a symbol of Sable luxury and
craftsmanship.
The 2000 Sable Sedan is available in GS and LS models,
while the GS trim package is now offered along with the
LS trim on Sable Wagon.
PERFORMANCE
The Vulcan powertrain on the 2000 Mercury Sable has been
refined to provide increased horsepower and torque, and
the optional Duratec benefits from improvements resulting
in lower levels of noise, vibration and harshness.
Vulcan 3.0-liter V-6
* 153 horsepower @ 5000 rpm -- 8 more horsepower than
1999
* 182 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpm -- 12 lb.-ft. more
torque than 1999
Duratec 3.0-liter V-6
* 200 horsepower @ 5750rpm
* 200 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpm
Both the Vulcan and Duratec engines meet Low Emissions
Vehicle (LEV) standards in California and 13 northeastern
states.
Numerous transmission enhancements combine to provide
smoother shifts, while steering, suspension and brake
refinements help improve ride smoothness and vehicle
dynamics, while providing a quieter interior environment.
An All-Speed Traction Control system is available with
anti-lock brakes. This system is designed to improve grip
on surfaces with differing traction between the front
tires, such as on concrete and ice, particularly while
turning, making lane changes or driving uphill.
The Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) uses the
anti-lock braking system to optimize the balance of
braking effort between the front and rear brakes and
between the left and right rear brakes.
Larger 16-inch standard wheels and tires are wider and
lower to deliver a smoother, more comfortable ride, along
with improved performance.
