2001 Mercury Cougar four door. |

The current Mercury Cougar has been one huge success story for Mercury that has also been critical for its rebirth. The Cougar is one of Ford Motor Company's hottest cars in their total lineup, so it's needless to say how critical each change implemented is carefully reviewed before it appears on a production model. The attitude at Mercury regarding the Cougar is to take it slow. Don't doing anything too radical that would steal away the Cougar's youthful and sporty theme. If you were able to attend the SEMA show last year, you certainly saw the amount of enthusiasm that the Cougar was generating from the after market - and Ford took notice as well. There was one Cougar that seemed to catch the attention of Mercury officials the most. Was it Inform Design's Cougar Eliminator? No. But that's what I would have guessed myself if asked that question. What caught the attention of Mercury officials was a certain red Cougar with its entire side cut away to expose the Cougar's interior. Mercury immediately sent two brand new identical red 1999 Cougars to a Roush facility in Livonia, Michigan to explore the possibilities of turning the current Mercury Cougar into a four door - YIKES! Real Cougar's cannot actually be made as four door models you say? Try again. But this time picture Saturn's three door model introduced last year, only on a Cougar - and make it a four door instead of the Saturn's three. When I first heard about the new Cougar from a Roush employee, I just had to see it for myself. Well SEEING is BELIEVING because that suicide four door Cougar is AWESOME! I know that's hard for die hard Cougar fans to understand, but I never thought I would like a front wheel drive Cougar either. . .not when compared to my 1970 XR-7 anyway. But the new Cougar was never really intended to be evolutionary like the Mustang is. The new Cougar was designed to capture a new market for Mercury and considering that 60% of people buying Cougars are new to the Mercury brand, we would say that they have accomplished that goal. A Roush employee has told BlueOvalNews that Mercury has given a definite green light to produce a 4 door Cougar by 2001. . . .and having seen the car - we're sold on it! BlueOvalNews will be detailing more news on the new Mercury Cougar on our new site that we are launching soon. Until then you can go here for other Cougar news.
