FORD'S NEWEST S.U.V.

Ford's next S.U.V. to be released will be a mini to compete in the Geo Tracker segment.

Code Named "U204", the newest Ford SUV will also be available under the Mazda nameplate as well.

These mini-S.U.V. trucks are targeted at the smaller than Explorer size market. This market includes the Toyota Rav4 and Geo Tracker, to name a few. Ford has always felt that this market has growth potential for first time buyers or those who want an S.U.V. but cannot afford an entry level Explorer. It is speculated that "U204" will be offered under the Ford and Mazda nameplates only - Lincoln Mercury fans shouldn't feel left out though, that nameplate will receive the Lincoln Blackwood (an F-150 based luxury truck).

The only alternative that Ford is able to currently provide in the mini-S.U.V. market is the two door Explorer. It has long been rumored within Ford that they will discontinue the two door Explorer - which would make sense if a mini-S.U.V. was to become available.

"U204" will be available with either a 2.0 or 2.5 4 cylinder engine. The only V-6 available will be the 3.0.

Sales of two door Explorers; however, have increased 50% in the first four months of 1998 and now account for 25% of all Explorers driven home by customers. The main reason why the popularity of two door Explorers has risen is because Ford lowered the price of the 1998 model by $1,940. A 1998 Explorer sport now starts at $19,995. People who purchase two door Explorers are more likely to be single or female then four door buyers. 60% of two door buyers are between the ages of 20 and 35. "These customers want a vehicle that is sporty, stylish and fun, which gives them versatility for their active lifestyles," said Doug Scott, Explorer brand manager. "They also are much more likely to be first time S.U.V. buyers."

"U204" will either be manufactured at the Kansas City, MO. plant or Loraine, Ohio.

Even though the Ford Explorer two door sales are up and offer a better value than the competition, the market might be receptive to a Ford built mini-S.U.V., which could offer an even greater value and score another victory for Ford trucks.
