A COUGAR XR-7 COUPE? DON'T BET ON IT!

We've heard several rumors buzzing around Dearborn that the Mercury Cougar will be available in another body style - and it's not a convertible. . .but a sedan!

Naturally, this type of information had us scrambling around Dearborn to find out just where this Cougar is.

On our search we saw a lot of strange Fords. How about a prototype Taurus SHO Taxi cab? Or a 1995 Cougar Police car. We even saw a SuperCoupe Police car. But one of the strangest was a Mustang with the nose of a 1994 model, with the rest of the body being that of a 1993 model.

We eventually found the reported Cougar sedan parked inside a Ford test area in Dearborn. . .about 5 minutes from us!

We then decided it was time to contact our Cougar source within Ford. With a couple of photos in hand we tapped our source on the shoulder for some answers.

We had to know if this is a new and upcoming Mercury or has Ford lost their mind? The correct answer is neither.

Our Cougar source told us that during the development process of a new vehicle, Ford needs test mules. Since the Cougar and the Contour share the same platform, it makes sense to start testing Cougar components on a similar car that already exists.

In general, whenever you see a front end of a new model car mated to the chassis of a different car with the same platform, Ford is usually testing out the engine's cooling system for the new car.

That's exactly what Ford had in mind when they mated this 1999 Cougar's front end to the body of this 1997 Ford Contour. You might see similar photos like this one (minus the fence) in some major magazines touting them as some outrageously new product that Ford is coming out with, but now you know the real scoop.

You can still freak your friends out by telling them that Ford is going to make a Cougar XR-7 sedan though ;)
