Pilot plants tests manufacturing equipment before the actual assembly plant that is going to build the car does. The main purpose of the pilot plant is to manufacture vehicles for the first time, before volume production begins, which aids in shortening production time. Ford's Pilot plant - Edsel Ford Pilot Plant, is located in Allen Park, Michigan, can manufacture several vehicles at one time. Vehicles are rolled around on dollies or skates from station to station until the assembly process is complete.
