WILL FORD BE CLOSING SOME ASSEMBLY PLANTS?

Tuesday was the last day of production for the Buick City Assembly Plant. The Flint, Michigan plant had been producing vehicles since 1905 and made an estimated 15.8 million Buicks.

While most Ford enthusiasts COULD NOT care less about Buick City, the U.A.W. does and it's the first stone cast that merely ripples the water.

The U.A.W. knows and understands one important fact: Ford and GM are making more money than ever. With higher profit margins expected this year than ever before, it's no surprise that BlueOvalNews is once again hearing about Ford Assembly Plant Closings due to over capacity. . . .or huge way to cut costs further.

As Ford Motor Company continues to consolidate its platforms, outsource more modular assemblies and entire subsystems, the need for fewer assembly plants looks like a good sale to the public, but not to the unions. One union member might ask if Ford really needs 20+ billion in cash reserves? Where is the loyalty to the working people ?

BlueOvalNews has been receiving mail on occasion since November 1998 which alleges that Ford Motor Company will consolidate some of its assembly plants in an effort to streamline some of its assembly plants and operations.

With platform reduction comes assembly plant reduction. Take for instance the Flat Rock, Michigan plant. Today they make the Mazda 626 and the Mercury Cougar. Within a few years they will be adding the Mercury Sable production and quite possibly the Ford Mustang as well.

We're told that the first Ford plant that will get reorganized will be Dearborn. Whether the Mustang goes to Flat Rock or Wixom isn't the big story. The big story is that either way the Mustang will leave Dearborn. Once the Mustang is gone, the plant is wide open for some serious production. . .it can handle more capacity than Ford can sell Mustangs.

Dearborn wouldn't stay idle for long. We're told that all Ranger production would be combined there once the Mustang moves out. This would leave Twin Cities and New Jersey without any product lines. . .which would leave them like Ohio - moth balled.

Another big move comes when the Sable and Taurus separate. It's expected that Taurus production will be the sole responsibility of Chicago. The Sable will move to a new platform and with its production moving to Flat Rock, the Atlanta Assembly Plant wouldn't have a vehicle to produce. No new models are expected to be introduced at Atlanta. Moth balls again.

If you work at a Ford plant, let us know when your Union's agreement with Ford expires or is up for a renewal so we can amend with site with new information.
